"Christmas Fans" pattern

pretty crochet fans for the Christmas tree

I'd like to share with you today the handmade decorations I've made to go on our own Christmas tree. And as Christmas is a time of sharing and giving, this pattern is my Christmas gift to you.
Happy Christmas! 😃

Being someone who loves to make pretty things, Christmas is like, well, Christmas! It's the most perfect excuse to create full-on, no-holds-barred prettiness.

Excuse me, you're in my shot!

The inspiration for my crocheted Christmas decorations came from this incredible Christmas tree created by Kaffe Fassett in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London.

I am a huge Kaffe Fassett fan, no pun intended, his use of colours and visual texture is unique. He knits, among many other crafts/arts, so check his work out next time you're looking for inspiration.

Kaffe Fassett's fabric design "Jupiter" in the purple colourway, has been my colour inspiration for some of my fans. Sometimes colour inspiration comes from pretty things around the house.

The pattern can be made up in any weight yarn, just remember to change the size of your hook to suit.
The "Christmas Fans" pattern is written in UK terms, but is repeated in US terms at the end.
The abbreviations used, are at the end of the UK version of the pattern.

Stitches used : slst, ch, htr (hdc), tr (dc) , fptr (fpdc)

Check out YouTube, Pinterest, or books if you need help with the stitches themselves.

You will need:

crochet hook    6.50 mm /  3  /  K/10.5

KPC Gossyp Chunky yarn   .....  it's a 100% organic ball of luscious, cotton, yarnspiration
You can find it here at Yummy Yarn and Co.
(For the sticks of the fans in the photos below, I used 2 strands of an 8ply cotton yarn                           which I had in my stash. It doesn't have the same beautiful body as the Gossyp                                     Chunky.)

scissors and a wool needle (for merely the teeniest bit of yarn end sewing in I promise)

1fptr around next st, 1htr in same st .... this can be a bit awkward (refer to blue arrow in                        photo below), but it's worth the trouble as it makes the shape of the fan nicer.
Cut yarn and pull through loop.                                                            (2ch, 6htr, 6fptr)

Leaving a 4" tail, make 2ch with new colour, 1htr in same sp,

Using new colour make 1ch * ( 1tr in next st 1ch, slst in next st, 1ch) * rep to end.
Cut yarn with a 30 cm tail. Pull ends through loop.                                      (12ch, 6tr)
Thread needle with the yarn end.

Hanging loop :  WS facing, thread tail end back through the top row of crochet to the middle of
the fan. Fold yarn over in half and tie a knot close to the fan itself. Thread yarn end                              through crochet.

Tassel

1.  Thread wool needle with 50 cm of yarn, to wrap around the head of the tassel.
2.  Wrap yarn for the tassel 16 times around your hand/ matchbox/ cardboard etc
My tassel is approximately the same length as the fan.
3.  Cut through all pieces at one end, and remove hand/ matchbox/ etc
4.  Using the crochet hook, carefully pull the tassel strands halfway through the original 4ch loop of               the fan.
5.  Holding tassel strands in one hand, and using the needle with thread, wrap tightly around the                     tassel strands 5 times to make a "neck" for the tassel.
6.  Using needle, tuck the threaded end of the thread down through the neck into the tassel                             "skirt". Cut thread leaving a 1½" tail. Repeat for the other end.

Let's enjoy a minute of joyful silence for a successfully completed Christmas decoration.

Don't forget to post photos of your own fans made with my "Christmas Fans" pattern at #sewMimiK on Instagram, or you can email them to me as well 😊 I'd love to see them.

What will you do with your crocheted fans? Will you put them on your Christmas tree? use them to decorate special gifts? jewellery?

I wish for you a Christmas season filled with colour, with laughter and with peace.
Happy Christmas season,
Kellie
