Purple butterfly quilt

The purple butterfly has flown away

The time came to set the butterfly quilt free, and I'm missing it already.

But now that it has arrived safely at its new home I can share some more photos with you! 😊

I like butterflies - is there anyone who doesn't? Starting with my faithful quad ruled notebook, I drew a butterfly outline over the lines on the page. I wanted to use only full squares and Half Square Triangles (HST) to make the quilt top, which meant tweaking the butterfly outline so it only had 45 degree angles (as a HST block does). Once my outline was sorted, I could cut out and piece together the squares and HST blocks needed to make up the quilt top.

When I'm looking for quilting inspiration I often turn to Angela Walters work. She would have to be my quilter girl-crush! Angela used lots of feathers on this beautiful butterfly quilt made by Tula Pink .

I'm always keen to practice feathers, a design I adore, so feathers it was.

More feathers,

even more feathers.

The upper wings ....

and lower wings ....

have different, but complementary swirly designs.

I hadn't originally intended to machine quilt so heavily but that beautiful white, negative space called to me. Along with the feathers, I was keen to practice a background fill with lots and lots of curved lines. I love the texture quilting creates.

The back of the quilt was made from different pieces of fabric.

Aurifil 50 weight thread was used to quilt the entire quilt, and the batting is 100% cotton.
The binding is a Philip Jacob's fabric, a mix of greens and purples, called "Begonia".

Thank you for reading along with me today, it's a pleasure to share this quilt with you.
Best wishes,
Kellie
